One of his best-known essays is “Self-Reliance.”He was recognized as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing forces of society, and he distributed his thoughts through dozens of published articles and more than 1,500 public speeches across the United States.

Ralph moderately moved away from the religious and social faiths of his contemporaries, forming and expressing the theory of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay “Nature.”Regarding this work, he delivered a speech entitled “The American Scholar” in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. estimated to be America’s “intellectual Declaration of Independence.”

He wrote most of his excellent essays as lectures first and then edited them for print. His first 2 collections of essays, Essays: First Series (1841) and Essays: Second Series (1844), describe the core of his thought. Emerson wrote on many subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing specific concepts such as individuality, liberty, the ability for humankind to actualize about anything, and the relation between the soul and the around the world.

Emerson’s “nature” was more thoughtful than naturalistic: “Philosophically viewed, the universe is formed of Nature and the Spirit.” Emerson is one of the various characters who “took a more pantheist or pandeist path by declining ways of God as separate from this world.”

He resides amongst the linchpins of the American romantic movement, and his work has very influenced the philosophers, writers, and poets that followed him. “In all my essays,” he wrote, “I have taught one principle, namely, the infinity of the own man.”Emerson is also well known as a guide and fellow of Henry David Thoreau, a fellow transcendentalist.
